The Wild Unknown Archetypes Deck review

Kim Krans's archetype deck, where the guidebook does as much work as the cards.

The verdict: Kim Krans's archetype deck and guidebook, organised into suits rather than the loose sets most oracle decks use, with writing substantial enough to be read on its own. Buy it if you want archetype prompts and a guidebook that gives you somewhere to go after the draw. Skip it if you want tarot, because this has no arcana, no spreads tradition and none of the transferable structure a tarot deck gives you.

What it does well

Where it falls short

What owners report

Reader reports consistently praise the guidebook, which is unusual: in most decks the book is an afterthought and readers say so. Here it is the reason people recommend it, particularly to readers who found other archetype decks too thin.

The recurring caution is that buyers expecting tarot are disappointed, which is a labelling problem rather than a product one. Reports from people who wanted prompts rather than readings are consistently positive.

Hay House Archetype Cards by Caroline Myss

Myss's deck names recognisable social roles with explicit light and shadow attributes, which people identify with faster. The guidebook is much slimmer and the wider framing around the deck deserves scepticism. We compare the two directly.

If you want Krans's artwork in a structure with a shared literature behind it, the tarot deck is the one. Harder to learn from than a Rider-Waite and far more transferable than any oracle deck.

Common questions

What is the difference between this and the Wild Unknown Tarot?

Structure. The tarot deck follows the standard 78-card arrangement with major and minor arcana, so books and spreads apply to it. The archetypes deck is Krans's own system of archetypes grouped into suits, with a much fuller guidebook and no tarot structure at all.

Is an archetype deck better than tarot for shadow work?

Neither is better; they work differently. An archetype deck names a pattern directly, which is faster. Tarot gives you an image and a situation to interpret, which is slower and often richer. Many people use one for daily prompts and the other for longer sessions.

Do I need to know anything to start?

No. Draw a card, read the guidebook entry, and write about where that pattern shows up in your life. The guidebook here is substantial enough that it does the teaching. Our guide to using oracle cards for shadow work sets out a longer practice.

Are oracle decks made up?

Every oracle deck is one creator's system, which is exactly what it is and no criticism. Tarot has a shared structure and a literature that decks can be compared against; oracle decks do not. Knowing which you are buying prevents the most common disappointment in this category.

Can card work be harmful?

Cards themselves are prompts. What can be difficult is what surfaces, particularly for people carrying trauma, and a card gives you no container for that. If reflection consistently leaves you worse rather than clearer, that is a reason to work with a licensed mental health professional rather than to draw again.
